May 5: The Reading Railroad will stop by Fairview Elementary. The kindergarten classes will listen to the story by Jan Brett, “Town Mouse, Country Mouse.”
Parents of newly enrolled kindergarten students should bring their children to the Early Literacy Center, which is located at the Logansport Public Library. These new kindergarten students will receive a free book. It is Reading Railroad’s way of celebrating children entering kindergarten. The center is a place for parents to bring children ages preschool up to second grade. Parents help their children do reading activities. The center is open every Monday from 1 to 6 p.m.
May 6: Kindergarten classes from Columbia Elementary will receive a Reading Railroad visit.
May 7: All Cass County kindergarten and first-grade classes are taking part in The Reading Railroad 500. Every class is trying to meet the goal of reading 500 books. Parents should help their child achieve this classroom challenge. Every class that finishes will receive a $20 prize from Reading Railroad. This should be a great way to celebrate reading.
May 8: The Reading Railroad is off to Franklin Elementary. Mrs. Brown will share a story but will also talk about summer reading. It is very important that children continue reading all summer long. Children have worked hard all year and they need to keep their engines tuned. Those 20 minutes of reading every day should keep them on track.
May 9: The Reading Railroad will make a trip to Royal Center and meet with kindergarten students from Pioneer Elementary.
Parent Tips: Weave language and literacy into everyday activities. Simple projects like writing a grocery list together or talking about the signs you see as you go for a ride in the car can help build on children’s literacy development. Older children might enjoy keeping a journal and writing about daily events. Younger children might draw pictures about their daily adventures. This could be a nice quiet activity for children to do all summer long.
The Reading Railroad serves as the coordinator for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. Any baby that lives in Cass County and was born from January 2007 on is eligible to be a part of this program. The Milt Cole family is the generous sponsor, making it possible for babies to receive a free book each month until they are 5 years old. The first book they receive is “The Little Engine that Could.” After that, age-appropriate books are sent to the child’s home. It is important that if a family moves, someone should call the Reading Railroad at the above number and ask for Mrs. Brown. This will ensure that children stay in the program. We want all babies to learn to love books.
