The Logansport Police Department held its annual Bicycle Safety Poster Contest in conjunction with the Pharos-Tribune.
Elementary students from Logansport schools are given the opportunity to design and draw their own posters, and the winner is selected by officers from the Logansport Police Department.
The winner, Michelle Cortes, a fifth-grader at Landis Elementary, was presented with a new bicycle along with a new helmet by Assistant Chief AJ Rozzi and officers George Franklin Jr., Mike Neher and Dan Farris.
The poster contest is held each year in the spring to kick off bicycle safety awareness for students in Logansport. The Logansport Police Department will also be sponsoring its annual “Bicycle Safety Rodeo.” This event has been held annually since 1993. This year’s event will again be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 14 at Tower Park. The event is free and open to all.
As in the past, members of the LPD will be serving hot dogs, chips and soft drinks. There will be an obstacle course for bicyclists of all ages to test their bicycle riding skills as well as their safety skills and their knowledge of the rules of the road. All who complete the course will be given an official LPD bicycle driver’s license.
Tower Park Swimming Pool will be open and each person who rides their bike through the safety course will be given a pass to swim free for the day. Throughout the day there will be drawings for over 100 free bicycle safety helmets. The events of the day will conclude with the LPD holding a drawing for 12 bicycles.
For more information or to obtain a free poster, call officers Franklin Jr. or Neher at LPD at (574) 753-4101.
