April 28: Today everyone is welcome to the Parent/Child Early Literacy Center “Train Station” located at the Logansport Public Library. The center is open from 1to 6 p.m. every Monday. Reading Railroad thanks the Logansport Art Association, the Logansport Library and the Logansport Community Schools for their assistance with projects for the center. Preschool through second grade children will find the reading and art activities a fun place to spend some time with their parents. At the “Train Station” today the group will be talking about how household chores such as setting the table can help children learn about one-to-one correspondence. Folding clothes and sorting socks are also ways to include a child in household responsibilities.

All newly enrolled kindergarten students were given a cut out of a train that can be turned in at the Early Literacy Center any Monday for a free book.

April 29: Spring has Sprung! Children might like to explore books about insects or find a book about how things grow. Spring is a time to dig into a new book.

April 30: Reading Railroad will stop by Landmark Adult Learning Center. The GED class will listen to a presentation on Reading Railroad and how the goal of reading 20 minutes is important for adults to model.

May 1: First-grade students from Fairview Elementary will stop by the Logansport Public Library. The children will listen to a puppet show by the librarians to encourage child summer reading at the library.

May 2: Franklin Elementary first-grade children will visit the Logansport Public Library.

The Logansport Library has kept the first-grade, library cards at the library during the school year. When Logansport first-grade children make their May library visit, they will get their library cards back. Reading Railroad hopes that parents will continue these library trips. Going to the library and selecting books each month is a great habit to get into.

Parent Tips: After reading a book, ask questions such as “What part of the book was interesting or funny?” “Who is your favorite character?” “Can you think of a new or different ending?” “Would you recommend the book to a friend?” “What new things did you learn from reading the book?”

Reading Railroad has sponsored a challenge to all kindergarten and first grade classes in Cass County. It is called “the Reading Railroad 500.” During the month of May all kindergarten through first-grade classes will be trying to reach the goal of reading 500 books. Parents can help their child by reading to them and writing the title of the books they have read together on the challenge sheet sent home by their teacher. All kindergarten and first-grade students must read at least 10 books. Teachers can keep a list of books that they read to their class and that can go towards the 500 book goal. When the class has reached their goal they should e-mail Mrs. Brown at pbrown.rrailroad@verizon.net. Every class that meets their goal will receive a check from Reading Railroad for $20. Doesn’t that sound like a good way to celebrate!
