Bridging the gaps
The Pharos-Tribune gives this Rose to the Wabash and Erie Canal Association in Delphi:
It isn’t every day a group of volunteers bands together to save a historic bridge for future generations to enjoy. But that’s just what the Wabash and Erie Canal Association members did with the bridge now known as the Gray Bridge, carrying foot traffic from downtown Delphi across the canal to the canal park. The 128-foot-long Houck Road Bridge formerly spanning the Big Walnut Creek in Putnam County was moved to Delphi in July and now supports itself from end posts on wood blocking. The association is still looking for donations for the bridge’s final restoration and work is still under way to finish setting and decking before it’s connected to walking trails. We’re glad to see so many people willing to give their time to make sure structures like the Gray Bridge stick around.
Making best of situation
The Pharos-Tribune give this Rose to The Thrifty Shopper:
Praise and criticism have swirled around a protest staged by Lauren Waldron, owner of The Thrifty Shopper store in downtown Logansport, against the roadblocks raising funds for nonprofits twice a month during the summer. But she insists she’s not anti-fundraiser — she just wants to protect her business from losing significant sales because of the fundraisers. To prove it, she held an off-site sale and donated 20 percent of the earnings to the local Mental Health Association. Waldron says she’s hoping to make the off-site sale an ongoing fundraiser for various nonprofits. We hope other businesses unhappy with the roadblocks will follow her example, finding creative ways to protect their businesses while still supporting area organizations.
