Shelter supporters moving closer to goal

Two months ago, the Cass County Humane Society needed about $350,000 to begin construction of a new animal shelter.

Now the number is down to $250,000.

Slowly but surely, the society is moving closer to its goal of raising $750,000 for the new shelter. That’s $650,000 for the building and $100,000 for furnishings and other expenses to get the shelter up and running.

If you’d like to help, now would be a great time to write a check.

You can also stop in at one of several local businesses to buy a $1 window tag to show your support for the shelter. The tags are available at all Cass County veterinary clinics and at Maxx Tan, McCords Do It Best Center, Jerry’s Pizzeria, Bruno’s Pizza, Judy’s Goodlife Emporium, Rural King, Family Video, Hair Salon 303 and West Side Cut and Curl, in addition to several local taverns.

Organizers hope to break ground for the new shelter at Water and Holland streets by spring, but the exact date will depend on the success of the fundraising effort. The society will not start work until it has the money in the bank.

Plans for the new facility include 30 indoor/outdoor dog runs, two cat rooms, an educational room for training, a director’s office, a front lobby and reception area, quarantine rooms for bite cases and a fenced area for walking dogs.

The building will total more than 6,000 square feet — more than twice the size of the current facility, a structure that was intended as a temporary home for the county’s unwanted animals while officials worked on a permanent solution.

So far, that temporary home has been in use for more than seven and a half years.

Cass County residents have been generous so far, contributing roughly $500,000 toward the new shelter, but the sooner the humane society can raise the rest of the money, the sooner it can break ground on that new structure.

Please do what you can to help.
