Signs

The Cass County Visitors Bureau is working on a program to help visitors find their way around the county.
That’s a good move.
The bureau’s first challenge is attracting visitors to the county. Its second is helping them to get where they want to go once they arrive.
The county has much to show off. There’s the natural beauty of France Park and the artistic beauty of the Dentzel Carousel.
There are the local athletic fields that frequently draw visitors from out of town for tournaments.
There’s McHale Performing Arts Center, which often draws visitors for concerts and theatrical performances.
History buffs might be looking for the nearest museum. Outdoorsmen might be looking for a campground or a boat ramp.
The new sign program will make finding those attractions easier.
The visitors bureau will pay Guidance Group Consulting $43,000 to develop a pathway system for Logansport and Cass County. The project has been in the works since Purdue University helped the county develop a strategic plan three years ago.
During a recent visit, a consultant worked with members of the community to establish a priority list of area attractions, then develop a system of signs to get area residents and visitors to those sites.
And the signs won’t just help visitors. They’ll help local residents in finding government buildings, historical locations, local parks, schools, medical facilities, restaurants, hotels and entertainment hot spots.
At the same time, the county is working to establish a new Web site using similar imagery and information. The idea is to keep the look consistent from the time prospective visitors look Cass County up on the Internet to the time they arrive in the community.
We applaud the visitors bureau for pursing this project, and we encourage Cass County communities to support them in the effort. An effective sign program is a part of the welcome mat a community puts out for its visitors and its newer residents.
It helps them to get where they’re going. And it invites them to stick around.
