Community happenings: College fair, Taste of the Arts


---- — Event celebrates Hispanic contributions

Ivy Tech Community College will host a Hispanic Heritage event at its Logansport campus from 1 to 7 p.m. Sept. 19. The event is free and open to the public. This will be an opportunity for the community to learn about and celebrate the region’s rich Hispanic cultural heritage.

The event will feature authentic Hispanic food and drink, information and displays about the culture, and fun activities for kids.

Taste of the Arts coming in Akron

AKRON — Akron Area Arts League is hosting Taste of the Arts, an evening filled with food, live music, dancers, crafts and top local artists displaying and selling their works of art. There will be a live Art Auction, as well. The event will be 4 to 8 p.m. Sept. 28 at the Akron Community Center, 815 Rural St., Akron.

Ivy Tech to have college fair

KOKOMO — Representatives of more than a dozen colleges will be on hand to talk about transfer opportunities and continuing education at the annual College/Transfer Fair sponsored by Ivy Tech Community College Kokomo Region. The fair is free, and is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Alumni Hall on the Kokomo campus, 1815 E. Morgan St.

Ivy Tech students and alumni will be able to gain information on opportunities to transfer their Ivy Tech college credits and degrees respectively, to institutions where they can continue their education to bachelor’s degrees and beyond. Area high school students also are invited to come to learn about college and university offerings.

Information will be available from representatives of Anderson University, Ball State University, Indiana Tech, Indiana University Kokomo, Indiana Wesleyan University, IUPUI, Ivy Tech, Marian University, Purdue University Kokomo, St. Mary of the Woods, Trine University and University of Indianapolis.

Students who fill out surveys evaluating the event will be entered in a prize drawing.

Domestic violence vigil slated

A Domestic Violence Vigil will be held at noon Oct. 2 at the corner of Fourth and Market streets in the farmers market corner lot. There will be a victim to speak and the Domestic Violence Task Force of Cass County will be present. The main objective is to raise awareness to the problem of domestic violence and to honor those who lost their life to domestic violence.
