Community happenings: Wheatland closing, playground dedication

Wheatland Ave. closing from Third to Vine

Wheatland Avenue between Third and Vine streets will be closed from today for approximately two weeks to install underground drainage pipe. Street parking is prohibited on Wheatland Ave. between Third and Vine during construction.

Walton playground to be dedicated

The public is invited to a dedication ceremony in Walton Town Park to celebrate the completion of the new playground at 5 p.m. today. The new playground was funded by a $15,000 gift to the Cass County Community Foundation from King Oil in honor of the firm’s 40th year in business and designated for the new playground equipment.

Old theater returning live entertainment

The old State Theatre is being restored to its original purpose, bringing back the stage that was behind the movie screens and haivng live entertainment. There will be comedians, bands and many other shows. The first show is at 9 p.m. Sept. 13 featuring Ben Bergmen and Al Jackson.

CANI Program assists veterans

CANI (Community Action of Northeast Indiana) has openings in the Supportive Services for Veteran Families program.

The SSVF program is designed to assist veterans who are homeless or at risk of being homeless. Specifically, the program can help eligible veterans by providing:

• Help locating and securing stable housing for Veterans and their families.

• Assistance with rent, security and utility deposits, and other housing-related costs.

• Assistance in obtaining VA benefits such as vocational and rehabilitation counseling, employment and training services, and education benefits.

Participants must be discharged from the military (except dishonorably) and be facing problems with their current housing situation.

CANI is providing this program to eligible individuals in 24 counties including Cass and Miami counties. Beginning Oct. 1, 2013, the SSVF program will also be available to Veterans in Fulton and Pulaski counties.
