Blind quilter to speak at Spring Fling

Extension Homemakershosting crafts event

Most quilters can see the colors they pick out to create their quilts.

Not Elizabeth Burns.

Burns, who learned to quilt after losing her sight in an automobile accident, will be the featured speaker at the Cass County Extension Homemakers’ Spring Fling on Thursday.

“This would be probably the biggest thing we’ve had for as long as I can remember,” said Pat Lefebure of the Extension Homemakers. It’s changed from previous years, in which the Spring Fling was a group of small seminars on gardening or similar topics.

This year, in addition to Burns’ presentation, the Spring Fling will also incorporate an arts and crafts exhibit made up of local artisans’ creations.

One Extension Homemaker club member was introduced to Burns after a presentation Burns gave at the Home and Family Conference at Purdue University last year.

“I am not a quilter,” Dee Butts said, but “she changed a lot of our lives. She’s fantastic.”

Butts invited Burns to Cass County to speak about the impact of the automobile accident, which severed her optic nerve and left her face unrecognizable, requiring several reconstructive surgeries.

Burns will also tell how she got interested in quilting about a decade after the accident and learned to quilt without her sight, eventually constructing a 6,000-piece quilt out of fabric cut to the size of postage stamps.

“She’s an amazing woman, and she’s funny. ... She talks about tragedy turned into triumph,” Butts said.

The Spring Fling is free but donations will be accepted. It will take place at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Cass County 4-H Community Center at the Cass County Fairgrounds, 2281 E. 125 North in Logansport. Registration starts at 6 p.m., with registration for the arts and crafts exhibits starting at 5:45 p.m.
