When hearing the word addiction, most people likely think of drugs, alcohol or gambling. While those might be the high rollers that get the most attention, there are many other addictions people suffer with every day that largely go unnoticed.
In fact, there are 700 of them, according to Pastor Mike Osborn of Logansport Church of the Brethren.
And in many of those addictions, Osborn says, people can’t overcome them on their own. That’s one of the many reasons why his church has decided to offer the Celebrate Recovery program.
Aimed at helping people “find healing from hurts, habits and hang-ups,” the church’s program is much like other traditional 12-step programs with one very distinctive difference, Osborn said.
It is a Christ-centered, biblically based recovery program.
The Celebrate Recovery program was launched 20 years ago by Pastor Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church. According to the program’s website, Warren began studying what Scripture says about recovery after his wariness for the classic 12-step program’s vagueness toward God.
“Most programs believe in a higher power, which could be anything. But this one is Christ centered,” Osborn said. “Christ is the only one capable of changing our lives.”
Finding the closest Celebrate Recovery program was 50 miles away, the church opted to implement a ministry here in Logansport.
It aims to get help to those who need it without any cost. Many don’t have health insurance to help cover the cost of therapy, and for many of those who are insured, their “managed care” affords them only eight to 10 visits.
“It most cases, that’s not enough time to overcome something,” Osborn said.
So, who’s the program for? It’s simple really.
“It’s for anyone who has a hurt, a hang-up or a habit,” Osborn said. “The doors are going to be open for all.”
