---- — Fourth-grade classrooms in Cass County are invited to participate in an essay contest to wrap up Logansport’s 175th anniversary.

One winning classroom will be selected to receive tickets to the anniversary’s closing celebration, “Birth of a City.”

The topic for the essay contest, hosted by Thelma Conrad, Cass County Historical Society Museum curator, is “Why save local history?” Only one essay should be submitted from participating classes – the project is a group effort. Essays should be 400 words or less and focus on local history.

“Kids are always seeing different images of the White House and Lincoln Memorial and know it has something to do with our nation’s history,” Conrad said. “On a local level, there are items to be saved and it’s just as important to save them locally.”

Conrad thought it was important to make sure a group of people have an opportunity to go to Logansport’s 175th closing celebration. The show will be at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15 at McHale Performing Arts Center. All tickets are $5.

The play that will be performed was written and compiled by local author Garry Williams.

“I think it’s an important event that’s going to take place,” Conrad said. “I’d love to see McHale filled. This is my small way of helping people have the opportunity to go.”

Although one teacher and his or her classroom will be selected as the winner, it is not considered a field trip. Conrad is hoping the winning tickets will spur parents or guardians to attend the celebration with the kids and celebrate the city's history.

Entries must be turned in by 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10. They may be emailed to cchistoricalsoc@frontier.com, mailed to the Cass County Historical Society at 1004 E. Market St., Logansport, IN 46947 or dropped off at the museum. Entries should include the school name as well as the teacher name.

In addition to winning tickets to the celebration, the winning essay will be printed in the Pharos-Tribune and the Cass County Historical Society newsletter.
