AMEEN: Fitting exercise into your lifestyle

We have transitioned quickly from spring to summer, and the warm weather is welcome to stay! It’s nice to see the sunshine and be able to enjoy the resources that our community has for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Of course, because that transition happened so quickly, it may have taken you somewhat by surprise and you’re not quite ready to find time for exercise. Are you finding excuses instead?

• Making excuses can be a good thing

Most people have no problem finding reasons why they can’t or don’t exercise more.

“I can’t go for a walk because I’m too tired.”

“I don’t want to try an aerobics class because I might hurt myself.”

It’s time that making excuses becomes something more positive – for you and your health. Instead of justifying your lack of physical activity, try thinking of reasons why you should get up and moving.

Tell yourself “I will exercise today!” because…

It will improve my heart health.

It may reduce my risk of cancer.

It may make me look better.

It will strengthen my bones.

It will help me become stronger.

It will help improve my cholesterol levels.

It will reduce my chances of getting type 2 diabetes.

It will help me reduce my healthcare costs.

This is personally one of my favorite reasons, because I truly believe that pursuing wellness through preventive and primary care is the key link to reducing costs. If you maintain your health, you won’t need as many healthcare services – doctor visits, medications, etc. There are several organizations in our community who can be resources for you in doing this – Logansport Memorial Hospital, Better Health of Cass County, the Cass County YMCA, and the United Way of Cass County… just to name a few.
