Peat problems with soils along the Wabash River Valley Basin near Peru will push back completion of a segment of the Hoosier Heartland Highway about one year.

Carlos Beltran has been named the American League Rookie of the Year.

Peyton Manning says he likes what he sees of Drew Brees. The two met last summer and Manning praised Brees' decision to stay at Purdue for his final season. Manning predicts great things for Brees as a pro.

Lewis Cass has the most players on the All-Mid-Indiana Conference team.

Tom Staubitz, manager of the local cable franchise, is more than $2 million richer. He and his wife, Leattta, won the Illinois Lottery. The winning ticket was purchased in Watseka, Ill. Staubitz says he thinks Gov. Robert Orr should change his mind about an Indiana lottery and initiate one, especially since Michigan and Illinois already have lotteries. The Staubitz family will receive $98,000 after taxes for the next 20 years.

Purdue's dreams of going to the Rose Bowl were dashed in the fourth quarter in Madison, Wis., where the Boilers dropped a 30-13 decision to the Badgers.

David McKee is the new Caston school superintendent.

Carroll has bowed out of the IHSAA playoffs with a 21-0 loss.

Ronald Reagan has won a second term in a landslide. State Sen. William Justice has won another term, and Tom Weatherwax is the new representative from District 24, which includes all of Cass County.

Democrats hold more governorships than Republicans nationwide.

Merlyn Raikes, Dick Sims and Lionel Billman are the at-large members on the Cass County Council. Max Metzger is the only Democrat elected to a county-wide office in Cass.

Nellie Fox of the Chicago White Sox is the American League Most Valuable Player.

Logansport has defeated the Indianapolis Tech Green Wave by the same score Tech defeated the Berries two years ago in Indianapolis. The win gives Logansport a 9-1 season and a final rating of No. 3 in the state. Coach Harvey Roberts is praised in a Pharos-Tribune editorial. It marks the second straight NCC title for the Berries, but this title is outright given the Berries’ 6-1 conference mark and win over Richmond.

Jeff Chandler and Fess Parker are starring in “The Jayhawkers” at the State.

Weekend basketball games will pit Medaryville against Grovertown, Buffalo at Young America, Kewanna at Mexico, Royal Center at Brookston, Bunker Hill at Swayzee, Tippecanoe at Aubbeenaubbee and Chalmers at Francesville.

A lynx reported near Lake Cicott has been determined to be an opossum.

Willard Burrows of Deer Creek Township has purchased the McCoy Grocery in Galveston for $3,000.

The John Fissel home has been destroyed by fire.

Ladies of the Westminister Guild visited the Emma Ash residence on West Broadway.

S.M. Kistler will be moving his insurance agency from Royal Center to Logansport.
