BIZ BUZZ: Erie Ave. furniture studio shuts doors

Aguirre, sons to rehab Market Street storefront into ice cream shop.

---- — Less than 17 months after its opening, a used furniture studio on Erie Avenue has closed its doors.

Once & Again Studio, which opened June 27, 2012, ended up being unprofitable, according to Bill Drinkwine, who with wife Deb Drinkwine owned the store. It was slated to have its last day of business Nov. 9.

“The cost of doing business was greater than we could earn,” Bill Drinkwine said, summing up the reason the family decided to close up shop.

“Our problem was — the product was good, the accessibility for material was good ... but we couldn’t get the volume [of sales] to meet the cost of doing business.”

The Drinkwines had planned to convert the second story of the building at 553 Erie Ave. into two two-bedroom apartments. The second story has been reframed and some rough wiring has been done, said Bill Drinkwine.

The main showroom had been remodeled before the store’s opening, and a second showroom, originally a bare storage area, had been finished this summer to match the first one.

The Drinkwines intend to sell the building now. At 7,350 square feet, it’s listed with Pacesetters Real Estate, where Deb Drinkwine is a real estate agent, for $149,900.


The owner of Los Gallos nightclub on West Market Street is in the middle of renovations on a building on East Market Street he hopes to turn into an ice cream shop.

Juan Carlos Aguirre, who with his sons is stripping down the inside of the building at 524 E. Market St., said he finalized the purchase of the building in August and expects to spend the next 8 to 10 months remodeling it before getting ready to open.

Aguirre said in Spanish he and his sons are still making plans for the ice cream shop, and don’t yet have an idea of when they will plan to open it.

County property records indicate the building formerly housed Kreuzberger Jewelers and Cardinal Office Products at different times. Its two-story front portion spans about 1,050 square feet per floor, and the rear utility/storage area encompasses about 1,410 square feet.

State property sales records indicate Aguirre bought the building for $11,000.
