---- — A new grocery store is coming to town.

Kroger Co.-owned Ruler Foods, a chain of grocery stores introduced this year, is in the process of developing interior layouts for a store in Eastgate Plaza between Shoe Sensation and Little Caesar's, according to the Logansport building commissioner.

The brand covers a line of small discount groceries, similar to Aldi, according to a June report in the Cincinnati Business Journal. It's part of Kroger's Jay C Food Stores. At the time, a Kroger spokesman characterized Ruler Foods as a test concept.

Midland Atlantic owns the Logansport plaza, including the space at 3047 E. Market St. where the grocery store is moving in.

The city building department has approved a building permit for interior demolition and cleanup, in preparation for later build-out, according to Building Commissioner Bill Drinkwine. Grand Industrial was contracted for the work, valued at $400,000.

Architects for Ruler Foods are working on the designs for the interior of the store, Drinkwine said. Once they're done and submitted to the State of Indiana for approval, the city expects to issue another building permit for the actual build-out.

Drinkwine said Ruler Foods hadn't yet submitted those plans to the state.

The majority of Ruler Foods locations were in Indiana, according to the Cincinnati Business Journal, and usually cover about 20,000 square feet.

A new Ruler Foods opened in Muncie in late September, the Muncie Star-Press reported, bringing the total number of Ruler Foods locations to about two dozen.

The nearest Kroger to Logansport is in Peru. The closest Ruler Foods location listed in the Oct. 27 Ruler Foods circular published on the Jay C Stores website is in Marion.

Jay C Stores spokesmen did not return multiple voicemail messages requesting comment.
