ROYAL CENTER — Work is under way to open a gun shop just north of Royal Center.
Mark and Jann Byers and their daughters Jayme and Kelsey Byers plan to open the shop by summer, Mark Byers said.
The family recently applied for a zoning variance to open the small retail store at 7449 N. Royal Center Pike, where they plan to sell bait and tackle in addition to firearms and gun supplies. Cass County Board of Zoning Appeals approved the variance Feb. 24.
The land had been zoned for agricultural use.
"We hope to be up and going this summer," Mark Byers said. But first, he's applied for a federal permit to sell guns commercially, a process he expects will take another two months.
He anticipates calling the store Byers' Gun Shop.
"It's something I've been wanting to do for quite some time," Mark Byers said, who's nearing retirement. "I just like guns."
