Miller joins staff at Memorial Hospital

Vascular specialist and surgeon Craig A. Miller will begin seeing patients at Logansport Memorial Hospital on Sept. 12.

Miller joins the staff at Memorial Hospital after having practiced at Vascular Surgery of Kokomo for the past five years.

Miller is a graduate of Northwestern University, Ohio State University and the University of California, San Francisco.

He is board certified in general and vascular surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He authored “The Making of a Surgeon in the 21st Century.”

Miller’s Logansport office is located in Suite 120 of Memorial Hospital West and can be reached at (574) 725-3591.



Baber family earns homestead award

INDIANAPOLIS — The Baber family of Walton has been presented with a Hoosier Homestead Award, which recognizes commitment to Indiana agriculture.

The presentation was made by Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman at the Indiana State Fair. A total of 79 Hoosier families were honored at the event.

The Baber family established its farm in Walton in 1896.

To qualify for the award, a family must have kept the farm in the family for at least 100 consecutive years. The farm must also consist of more than 20 acres and produce more than $1,000 of agricultural products each year.



Seminars offered for business owners

The Hoosier Heartland Small Business Development Center is offering a workshop and seminar for business owners.

The workshop, “Launching Your Business,” is being offered in the following locations from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.:

• Sept. 11 in Miami Chamber of Commerce, 13 E. Main St., Peru.

• Sept. 16 in Logansport-Cass County Economic Development Foundation office, 310 S. Pearl St., Logansport.

• Sept. 17 in Inventrek Technology Park, 700 E. Firmin St., Kokomo.

Questions about licensing, permits, record keeping, marketing and planning will be answered.

A second seminar, “Funding Options for Small Business,” will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 23 in the Inventrek Technology Park, 700 E. Firmin St., Kokomo.

Topics will include SBA loans, cash flow statements, components in writing a business plan and commercial lending information. A representative from SCORE will be present as well as a local lender.

Financial Corp. announces dividends

Logansport Financial Corp., holding company for Logansport Savings Bank, announced a quarterly cash dividend of $.15 on each share of its common stock for the third quarter of 2008. The dividend is payable on Oct. 10 to the holders of record on Sept. 10.



City approves two electrician licenses

The Logansport Board of Public Works and Safety has approved electrician certificates for David Kinder, of Fishers, and Mark Maupin, of Walton. Both candidate passed an examination given by the examining board of the city of Logansport.



Financial group earns high customer rating

Raymond James Financial Inc. ranked the highest in investor satisfaction according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Full Service Investor Satisfaction Study.

Ron E. Miller, a registered investment advisor at the Peru business, said the ranking was a tribute to the firm’s focus on putting client interests first.

The study measures overall investors’ satisfaction with full-service investment firms based on six factors: investment performance, financial advisor/broker, commissions and fees, account setup/account offerings, convenience and account statements. The study also measures investor satisfaction within three investors portfolio types: affluent investors, mass affluent investors and mass market investors.

Raymond James earned a score of 831 on a 1,000 point scale, receiving the highest ratings from investors in all six factors and performing particularly well in proactively contacting investors.

The study, conducted in April and May, was based on responses from 4,528 investors, who primarily invest with one of the 19 firms in the study.



The Andersons announces dividends

The Andersons Inc. announced a fourth-quarter 2008 cash dividend of $.085 payable Oct. 22, to shareholders of record Oct. 1.

This is The Andersons’ 48th consecutive quarterly cash dividend since its listing on the NASDAQ on Feb. 20, 1996. There are approximately 18.1 million common shares outstanding.



Area Five offering feasibility class

Area Five’s Business Development Program, in partnership with Ivy Tech Community College and the Small Business Development Center, is offering the “What’s Your Big Idea?” class from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sept. 16, 18, 23 in the Logansport Public Library.

The class offers four steps to test the feasibility of a business idea. This nine-hour course will help potential business owners examine their idea from personal, market, financial and general business perspectives.

Scholarships and financial assistance are available. The cost is $89 per business.
