Firefighters attend training academy
Logansport firefighters Steve Williams and Rob Grisez participated in a 32-hour course on flammable liquids fire fighting and terrorism response this month at the University of Nevada-Reno’s Fire Science Academy in Elko, Nev.
The course, geared for municipal and rural firefighters, taught fire personnel industrial fire fighting techniques to combat fires associated with flammable liquids in areas considered to be “soft targets” for terrorism attacks such as refineries, truck and rail terminals, rail tank cars, pressurized gas facilities, pipeline transfer stations and large liquid storage tanks.
The two Logansport firefighters were among 62 individuals from around the country who participated in live fire attack scenarios with actual flammable fuel mixtures.
Trooper recognized for excellent shooting
PERU — Master Trooper Paul Daugherty of Miami County has been recognized for excellent shooting.
Lt. Matt Bilkey, district commander of the Indiana State Police Peru Post, and Col. Rick Weigand, assistant superintendent of the Indiana State Police, honored Daugherty with a Possible Club Award pin.
Daugherty’s name will also be engraved on a plaque that is displayed in the lobby of the Indiana State Police Headquarters in Indianapolis.
Since the award’s inception in 1946, there have been 280 troopers that have earned the Possible Club Award for outstanding marksmanship.
Daugherty earned the award by shooting four perfect scores in the Indiana State Police firearms program.
Indiana State Police Peru Post has four additional active troopers who have earned the Possible Club Award.
Small Parts celebrates 50th anniversary
Small Parts celebrated 50 years in business on Aug. 24 with an event attended by approximately 1,000 employees, family members and special guests.
Small Parts has been operating continuously in Logansport since 1958. The company started in a rented building with 4,000 square feet at 707 Burlington Ave. In 1975, Small Parts became a wholly owned subsidiary of Materials Processing Inc., a private locally based holding company.
Small Parts manufactures custom precision stampings and subassemblies for the automotive, electrical, electronic and consumer products industries.
Seminars offered for business owners
The Hoosier Heartland Small Business Development Center is offering a workshop and seminar for business owners.
The workshop, “Launching Your Business,” is being offered in the following locations from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.:
• Sept. 3 in Tipton County Economic Development Corporation, 136 East Jefferson St., Tipton.
• Sept. 11 in Miami Chamber of Commerce, 13 E. Main St., Peru.
• Sept. 16 in Logansport Cass County Economic Development Foundation office, 310 S. Pearl St., Logansport.
• Sept. 17 in Inventrek Technology Park, 700 E. Firmin St., Kokomo.
Questions about licensing, permits, record keeping, marketing and planning will be answered.
A second seminar, Funding Options for Small Business, will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 23 in the Inventrek Technology Park, 700 E. Firmin St., Kokomo.
Topics covered in the seminar will be information on SBA loans, cash flow statements, components in writing a business plan and commercial lending information. A representative from SCORE will be present as well as a local lender.

State police train additional officers
INDIANAPOLIS — Training officers assigned to the Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division have completed training an additional 28 state troopers to conduct Level III inspections.
After passing the 40-hour course and conducting 32 inspections under the watchful eye of a certified inspector, these newly trained officers will be certified by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to conduct inspections.
Local woman serving national association
Logansport resident Gail Malm Armstrong was elected vice president of the American Association of Electronic Reporters and Transcribers during their annual convention in San Antonio, Texas.
The AAERT will hold its annual convention in Indianapolis in June 2009.
Ivy Tech offering HR conference
KOKOMO — Ivy Tech Community College is offering a Human Resource Professional Development Conference on Sept. 16 at its Kokomo location, 1701 Touby Pike.
The conference is designed to provide executives, managers, supervisors, office personnel, coordinators and other business professionals the opportunity to network, make contacts and share ideas with other leaders on how to effectively handle complex HR challenges facing all organizations today.
The morning session is from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and costs $74. Afternoon session is from 12:45 to 4:15 p.m. and costs $74. The cost for both sessions is $129.

Edward Jones hosting video presentation
Edward Jones financial advisor Dee Wenk of Logansport will host a free satellite broadcast, “Know Your Retirement Number,” at 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 9 at 313 Mall Rd., Suite A.
During the video presentation, experts will discuss Social Security and Medicare, share common mistakes that may impact one’s retirement strategy and provide tips on how to help make one’s retirement money last. In addition, Edward Jones chief market strategist, Alan Skrainka, will give viewers an economic update.
