Hanawalt certified as senior professional

Alicia Hanawalt, human resource officer at Security Federal Savings Bank, earned a certification as a senior professional in human resources.

The certification is awarded by the Human Resource Certification Institute. To qualify, an applicant must pass a comprehensive examination and demonstrate a strong background of professional human resource experience.

Hanawalt has been with Security Federal since April 2000. She is a 2000 graduate of Logansport High School and graduated from Ivy Tech with an associate degree in business administration in December 2005.

In 2006, she attended the Graduate School of Banking’s Human Resource Management School and in 2007 the Graduate School of Banking’s Advanced Human Resource Management School at the University of Wisconsin. Hanawalt has also completed the Human Resource Specialist Certificate Program from the Indiana Chamber and Management and Supervisory Institute from Ivy Tech in 2007.

Agricultural project receives grants

MAUMEE, Ohio — A collaborative team led by The Andersons, Inc. has been recommended to receive $5 million in grants from the Ohio Third Frontier Commission. The grants are for the development and commercialization of advanced granules and other emerging technologies to provide solutions for the economic, health and environmental concerns of today’s agricultural industry.

The collaborative team consists of The Andersons, Inc.; The Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center, Syngenta Crop Protection, Inc., PSB Company, National Lime and Stone Company and Ohio Bio-products Innovation Center.

Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher, Chair of the Ohio Third Frontier Commission, announced the commission recommended the grants for the development of advanced granules that effectively deliver fertilizers and pesticides or biologically active ingredients to specifically targeted areas, activating once exposed to water which reduces environmental risks, with virtually no drift problem.

Indiana Chamber offers courses in August

The Indiana Chamber of Commerce will offer two courses in August will help companies stay compliant with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards.

The 10-hour voluntary compliance course will be held at 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Aug. 19 and from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on August 20. This course is an overview of the most important and significant OSHA standards and topics. OSHA recommends taking the 10-hour course every two years and costs $595.

The 30-hour voluntary compliance course will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on day one; 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on days two and three and 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on day four. This course is designed to increase workplace safety awareness and compliance by providing expert instruction on OSHA codes and standards.

OSHA recommends taking this four-day course every three years. Attendees will receive a copy of the General Industry (1910) Code of Federal Regulations and costs $895.

Both will be held at the Indiana Chamber Conference Center, 115 W. Washington St., Ste. 850S, Indianapolis.

Those who complete either class receive a course certification card from the U.S. Department of Labor-OSHA. Both courses are presented by Bill Pfister and Bob Pfister of Safety Training & Consulting Inc.

Small business seminar offered

The North Central Indiana Small Business Development Center will present a seminar, Funding Options for Small Business, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 22 at the Inventrek Technology Park Building, 700 E. Firmin St. in Kokomo.

Topics will include information on SBA loans, cash flow statements, components in writing a business plan and commercial lending information. A representative from SCORE will be present as well as a local lender. The lender will present information on what a bank needs from a loan applicant and how lenders fit into the SBA loan process.

The workshop costs $35 per business.
