Son charged in NW Indiana hospital staffing death

CROWN POINT (AP) — The son of an 80-year-old woman found stabbed to death in her hospital room has been charged with murder.

The (Munster) Times reports 60-year-old Rodney Louis Dickinson was charged Saturday in connection with the slaying early Friday of Margrine Haywood, a patient at Methodist Hospitals Southlake campus in Merrillville.

Haywood's husband, James Haywood, was found stabbed to death in his Gary home a few hours after her stabbing, but no charges have been filed in connection with his death.

An affidavit says a witness told police she saw Dickinson acting strangely in his mother's hospital room, then heard screams and saw Dickinson running away. It says that before losing consciousness, Margrine Haywood told a nurse that Dickinson had killed her.

It's not clear if Dickinson has an attorney.
