UPDATED: Suspect identified in Purdue University shooting

WEST LAFAYETTE — 6:27 p.m. update

WEST LAFAYETTE — Tippecanoe County jail staff have identified the suspect being held in connection with the shooting at Purdue University as 23-year-old Cody Cousins, The Exponent, Purdue's student newspaper, reports.

The Exponent also identified the shooting victim as 21-year-old Wisconsin senior Andrew Boldt.

2:47 p.m. update

WEST LAFAYETTE (AP) — Officials at Purdue University in Indiana say one person was killed in a shooting at a campus classroom building.

Purdue Provost Tim Sands says he didn't immediately know the identity of the person killed or the person's connection to the university.

Campus police chief John Cox says the suspect is in custody after surrendering outside the Electrical Engineering Building following the shooting about noon Tuesday.

Cox says the person appeared to have targeted the victim.

1:36 p.m. update

WEST LAFAYETTE (AP) — Police have a person in custody following a reported shooting at Purdue University in Indiana.

Purdue spokesman Greg McClure tells The Associated Press that police haven't released information about possible injuries. The shooting was reported around noon Tuesday at the electrical engineering building on the school's campus in West Lafayette.

McClure says police have a person in custody but no details are available. The engineering building is on lockdown, and the university issued a campus-wide text alert advising students and faculty to take shelter while police clear the building on the 40,000-student campus.

Television footage shows a fire truck and several law enforcement vehicles around the building, which is across from where President Mitch Daniels' office is housed.

12:40 p.m. update

Police have cleared the Purdue University electrical engineering building and continue to search the area after a shooting occurred on campus.

Via its official Twitter account, the university has reported that one is in custody.

Officials say people should remain sheltered in place until further notice.

School officials have urged students and campus visitors to avoid the area and are reporting a shelter has been put in place.
