Carroll crash claims life

Two vehicles collide near Delphi.

DELPHI — A late-evening crash near Delphi claimed a driver's life and put another in the hospital Thursday.

Carroll County Sheriff's deputies responded at about 9:24 p.m. Thursday to a 911 call reporting a two-vehicle crash on Ind. 25 at Carroll County Road 600 West. The driver of a 1999 Pontiac, Joshua Smith, 32, Logansport, was pronounced dead at IU Health Arnett Hospital.

The other driver, Amanda West, 38, Lafayette, and her passenger had "minor non life-threatening" injuries and were also taken to the hospital, according to Major Tobe Leazenby with the Carroll County Sheriff's Department.

He said West was driving nortbound towards Logansport, when it appears Smith's car veered into her lane, leading to a crash.

“Initial information seems to point towards Mr. Smith abruptly going left of center for reasons unknown at this point,” Leazenby said.

When emergency responders arrived, West was trapped in the vehicle and Smith was seriously injured, Leazenby said.

Leazenby said there's "no indication or drugs or alcohol involved" and he does not believe speed was a factor.

He said IND. 25 was closed for about one and a half hours while the accident was investigated and cleaned up.

The Carroll County Sheriff's Department, Delphi Fire Department, Delphi Police Department and Carroll County EMS responded to the scene.

The crash is still under investigation by the Carroll County Sheriff's Department and the Indiana State Police.
