EVANSVILLE (AP) — Authorities say a woman has been arrested in connection with a fire that destroyed a nine-unit apartment building in Evansville, leaving many people homeless.
The 47-year-old woman lived in the building and was jailed Thursday on a preliminary charge of arson.
No serious injuries were reported from the fire that broke out Wednesday night in the Sugar Mill Creek Apartments complex on the city's west side.
Fire Chief Mike Connelly tells the Evansville Courier & Press the flames spread quickly after reaching the building's attic. The flames went high into the night sky and caused the center portion of the building to collapse, although other walls remained standing.
WFIE-TV reports least 20 people lost their homes and the Red Cross is providing assistance.
