PERU — A 28-year-old Kokomo man was arrested Monday night after deputies say he fled in a stolen van and crashed it into a fire hydrant near Grissom Air Reserve Base.
Miami County deputies attempted to stop a 2002 Mercury van for a traffic violation just after 10 p.m. at Schilling and Shaw streets in the Eagle Point subdivision near the base.
The driver, Brandon Taylor, 800 block of Rainbow Drive, Kokomo, refused to stop, according to police. Deputies say he fled and crashed into a tree at Shaw and Castle streets. He then continued to flee, leading deputies on a short chase that ended with Taylor crashing the van into a fire hydrant.Taylor fled on foot, but was quickly caught and placed under arrest. Officers determined the van was stolen and believe Taylor may have been intoxicated.Taylor is charged with auto theft, resisting law enforcement with a motor vehicle, resisting law enforcement, operator never licensed, reckless driving, criminal recklessness with a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of a property damage crash and operating while intoxicated.
