Cass commissioners issue burn ban

Resolution declares county fire hazard area

From Staff Reports

LOGANSPORT — Cass County commissioners have issued a countywide ban on open burning.

In a news release issued this afternoon, commissioners declared the county a fire hazard area and issued a ban on open burning and on the discarding of burning materials from a vehicle.

Alvin Beckman, the county emergency management director, said the ban prohibited open burning of trash or debris, in addition to campfires, recreational fires and cooking fires.

"This ban does not include cooking in a fire ring or an enclosed outdoor grill," he said.

Ceremonial outdoor fires will be allowed, Beckman said, but the organization sponsoring the fire must obtain authorization from the jurisdictional fire department and must have personnel and equipment available on scene for the event.

"This 'open burn ban' is in effect until further notice," the announcement said. "The board of commissioners, Cass County Emergency Management and the area fire chiefs will monitor the conditions and will advise when conditions improve enough to warrant the termination of the 'open burn ban.'"
