Memorial being held at local park

France Park will be holding a memorial dedication at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 27, at the public access site off Georgetown Road.

The event is for Scott Hathaway, who was a dedicated runner who loved the trails at France Park.

Hansen appointed to PTABOA board

The Cass County Council approved the appointment of Lisa Hansen to the county’s property tax assessment board of appeals, or PTABOA, at its meeting Friday.

The PTABOA serves as an independent board available to taxpayers looking to appeal their property tax bills.

Hansen is a certified level II assessor-appraiser and will serve on the board along with John Land, who was previously appointed by the council.

Tracking of criminals available to victims

Indianapolis — This week is National Crime Victims’ Rights Week and it marks the 1-year anniversary of Indiana’s Statewide Automated Victim Information and Notification system, or SAVIN.

Originally launched in April 2007, the system is available 24/7 to Indiana residents to call a toll-free number or log onto the Web to receive real-time information to track the custody status of offenders in Department of Correction and county jail facilities.

Users can also register to be notified by phone or e-mail when an offender is released, transferred or escapes from custody. The service is free to the public.

The public can register for the system by calling (866) 959-8463 or by logging onto www.vinelink.com

Indiana SAVIN is currently available in 31 Indiana counties and in the department’s 21 adult correctional facilities. The program will be implemented over a two-year period with the remaining 61 counties joining the system by the end of 2008.

Candidate holding town hall meeting

Tony Zirkle, a Republican from South Bend and a 2nd District Congressional candidate, is hosting a town hall meeting from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at McHale Auditorium.

The public is encouraged to attend.

Monticello police investigating accident

MONTICELLO — The Monticello Police Department is investigating a hit-and-run accident that occurred Friday at Twin Lakes High School.

A 15-year-old male was crossing Jefferson Street from the high school when he was struck by a vehicle traveling westbound, according to a news release from the department. The 15-year-old, whose name was not released, was struck by the front driver’s side of the vehicle and sustained minor injuries.

The vehicle was described as a silver or gray Honda Accord. Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call the Monticello Police Department at (574) 583-2256.

Council declares eight funds dormant

Following a unanimous vote from the Cass County Council Friday, the county now has $36,436.26 more in its general fund.

The money was moved from seven funds that the council declared dormant at its monthly meeting. The largest single amount of $34,239.72 came from the WRHC Grant fund.

An eighth fund, the Planning Grant fund, was also declared dormant but the money reverted to the county’s CEDIT fund where it originated.

Dance scheduled at Senior Center

Greg Allen, disc jockey for WSAl, will provide the music for a dance from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Downtown Senior Center, 115 S. Sixth Street.

Organizers say the event will be light on refreshments, large on fun.

LHS alumni band holding meeting

The Logansport High School alumni band is holding a call-out at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Logansport-Cass County Library.

This will be the first meeting and main topics will be a rehearsal schedule, membership requirements and possible performance activities.

No instruments are needed at this meeting.
