A new federal drug benefit could save Indiana senior citizens big money on their medications — if they can figure out how to navigate the cumbersome Medicare program.Hailed by the Bush Administration as a revolutionary advance, the drug benefit known as “Part D” is the most sweeping reform to the federal health program for senior citizens and the disabled since its invention 40 years ago.A six-month enrollment period began Nov. 15.

Time zone decision could renew Legislature's clock debate

INDIANAPOLIS — The decades-long debate over how Indiana sets its clocks will see its next jolt when a federal agency decides in the coming weeks whether it will redraw the state’s time-zone line. That decision is to come about the same time as when state lawmakers start their new session — and provide ammunition for those who want to reopen the time argument that has continued since a bill to adopt statewide daylight-saving time passed by one vote in April.

UNICEF says 90 million girls not getting primary school education

GENEVA — Some 90 million girls are being excluded from primary schools around the world for reasons that include outdated stereotypes defining a female’s place as in the home and social pressures for early marriage, the United Nations said Friday. The U.N. Children’s Fund said 46 countries were failing to get as many girls as boys into school, and that the global body’s long-term goal of universal education for children was far from a sure thing.

Debate heats up about continued U.S. Iraqi presence

WASHINGTON — Should we stay or should we go?The fundamental question about what the United States should do in Iraq is being asked with greater fervor across America and in the nation’s capital. The Bush administration is arguing that the nation must stay the course to prevent Iraq from becoming an oil-rich haven for terrorists and to keep the country from spiraling into a bloody civil war that could destabilize the Middle East.“If they are not stopped, the terrorists will be able to advance their agenda to develop weapons of mass destruction, to destroy Israel, to intimidate Europe, to break our will and blackmail our government into isolation,” President Bush said earlier this month at Alaska’s Elmendorf Air Force Base.

Diabetes cure target of study

SEATTLE — Researchers will soon begin testing a way to stave off diabetes by tripping up the immune system with the help of mouse cells.Scientists at the Pacific Northwest Research Institute in Seattle will be part of a national effort to see if they can stop type 1 diabetes — or at least delay its progression — by derailing the immune cells that attack the body’s insulin producers. The experimental therapy “has a reasonable shot at being the first building block toward a cure,” said Dr. Bill Hagopian, director of PNRI’s work on the therapy. In early trials, the treatment has enabled patients to continue making a portion of the insulin they need for up to two years.
